A win here means a chance at finals

The 2022 season has thrown around plenty of intriguing results so far, with very little predictable outcomes coming to the table over the first 12 rounds.

But a win against the Lightning in Round 13 sees the Pies lift from seventh to fourth on the ladder with one round remaining, and everything on the line to remain in with a chance of a finals berth.

In the wise words of head coach, Nicole Richardson – “destiny is in our hands”.

Goal percentage will play a significant role in the final standings, with a big game against the Vixens next week the only thing in the Pies’ way of finals.

Adjusting to the umpires paid off

While the Pies had another big penalty count against the Lightning, there is no doubt the difference between the first and second half was the severity of penalties.

The most evident change was in Jodi-Ann Ward’s game; where Ward was getting hands to ball early, she tallied seven contact penalties in the first quarter alone.

From then on, Ward only registered eight more for the rest of the game – and still managed to create crucial turnovers.

Overall, despite a highly penalised start (24 penalties in the first quarter), the Pies stuck to their ball-winning guns and cleaned up their act to finish on a high.

One-percenters were crucial

Rebounds and pickups were the name of the game, with both the attack and defence getting in on the action for both stats.

Jamaican duo Shimona Nelson and Ward both registered three rebounds apiece, while the team as a whole fought for a whopping 16 pickups to the Lightning’s four.

For context, Molly Jovic and Ward alone had four pickups apiece, with their workrate and hunt going above and beyond.

Capitalising on those opportunities was critical to getting the Pies over the line, as the Lightning threw everything they had at the Magpies as the match came to a close.
