“We’re not just here to make up numbers in the finals, we’re here to do some damage.”
After a huge 58-47 win over cross-town rivals, the Melbourne Vixens in the final round of Suncorp Super Netball, we’ve earned ourselves a spot in the minor semi-final where we’re set to face the Vixens again in the first ever Melbourne derby game in SSN history.
This year we’ve beaten the Vixens in both round 7 and 14, however finals is a whole new game of netball and we expect the opposition to come out firing, desperate to earn Melbourne netball bragging rights back. However, we’re prepared.
Assistant Coach Nicole Richardson (Richo) said “we’ve been playing some pretty good netball over the past month, and have good momentum going into the finals series”. In our post match interview from round 14, Richo praised Kimi Poi for her efforts on Renae Ingles and how “she took her out of the game”, which is an amazing effort for the Poi’s first full game for the Pies.
Geva said “to make finals after a tough couple of years” is extremely special and “it’s a great position to be in”. She knows that her team have it in them to go all the way, and especially after the performance last week, there’s no reason why we can’t do it again.
The game will be held at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville, Melbourne. This is the training grounds for the Melbourne Vixens, but this doesn’t bother our players. In a radio interview earlier in the week, Ash Brazill commented on how every netball court is the same in terms of dimensions, so it doesn’t matter where she plays.
If our defensive players can repeat last week’s efforts, which forced the Vixens to be called up for held ball more times than usual, we’ll do well to get the ball turned over and back in our offensive half.
Shimona Nelson was unstoppable at the post, and she is showing no signs of slowing down soon, so the Vixens will need to be strategic with their defence if they’re wanting to shut her down.
With no bonus points on the cards, the task is simple, win the game.
