Magpies Netball v Adelaide Thunderbirds at Titanium Arena on Sunday afternoon.
With one round remaining in the Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) home and away season, finals fever is well and truly in the air.
The Magpies will be one of four teams competing in the post-season, and with a win against the Adelaide Thunderbirds on Sunday afternoon; they could carry over a three-game winning streak and a heap of momentum into the finals series.
In what was a must-win game to book their place in the final four, the Magpies withheld a gallant West Coast Fever side to clinch a finals berth.
Caitlin Thwaites was prolific once again, converting 45 of the Magpies’ 49 goals, while strong performances from Shae Brown, Ash Brazill and Sharni Layton willed the Magpies to victory and in turn eliminated the fifth-placed Queensland Firebirds from finals contention.
“I think the team has really earned that spot. It’s been a journey for our team all season to cement that spot in the final four and they’ve done that which is a tick off the list,” head coach Kristy Keppich-Birrell said post-game.
The Thunderbirds were on the wrong end of a fired up Melbourne Vixens team, suffering a 71-50 loss at Margaret Court Arena.
Down by five goals at the half, the Vixens flexed their muscles to run away with the points and reclaim top spot on the ladder.
Round 4, 2017 – Magpies (64) defeated Thunderbirds (45) at Hisense Arena
The Thunderbirds proved no match for the Magpies as the home side stormed away to a 19-goal victory.
Thwaites was clinical in the shooting circle, missing only one goal from her 47 attempts.
Kim Ravaillion (16 goal assists, 37 feeds, two interceptions, two deflections) and Madi Robinson (14 goal assists, 30 feeds, two interceptions) exhibited their Diamonds credentials, while Sharni Layton had her hands in everything defensively with eight interceptions and five deflections.
Saturday night’s results: The Magpies are a lock for fourth position, but who they’ll meet in the first round of the SSN finals remains unknown. It’s down to two teams – the Lightning and the Giants – who happen to be facing off in a mouth-watering Saturday night clash at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. The Magpies will face the losing team the following week in the minor semi final.
Renae Ingles: After 160 National League Games, three premierships and a number of individual accolades, the Adelaide Thunderbirds will farewell midcourter Renae Ingles after she announced her retirement from the game earlier this week. Keep an eye on the Thunderbird crowd as they send off one Australia’s champion netballers.
Caitlin Thwaites’ goal tally: Our star shooter set a new career high for goals recorded in one season, shooting her 538th goal (previous best of 537 goals from 605 attempts) against the Fever last week. After another dominant shooting display, Thwaites leads the league in shooting with 555 goals from 603 attempts (92 per cent accuracy).
