Collingwood will hit the road for the first time this year, returning to their second home in Tasmania for the side’s first official practice matches against the NSW Swifts.

The hit-outs will mark the Magpies’ first time back on court since the final round of the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball Season in September of last year.

The Magpies will head south with an 11-woman playing squad including new recruits, Jacqui Newton and Kalifa McCollin.

McCollin will bring a new dimension to the Collingwood shooting circle, off the back of an impressive year with the Southern Steel in New Zealand’s ANZ Premiership League, where she boasted an 84 per cent accuracy rate.

At the other end of the court, Newton will mix up the Magpies’ defensive dynamic after three seasons as a training partner with the Melbourne Vixens. The goal-defender is a two-time netball premiership winner having claimed the 2019 Australian Netball League and 2018 Victorian Netball League silverware.

The squad will also be joined by freshly announced training partners Nyah Allen and Emma Ryde.

Maggie Lind won’t make the trip to Tasmania due to an injured calf and will be replaced for the weekend by local-born Kelsie Rainbow.

Kelsey Browne also won’t take part in the two practice matches but will travel with the squad, while Ash Brazill will remain in Melbourne to support Collingwood's AFLW side.

The matches will be Nicole Richardson’s first time at the helm, after being named head coach late last year. The two games pose the perfect opportunity for Richardson to test out some new combinations ahead of Round One.

Collingwood will line up against the NSW Swifts, who maintained a strong 2020 Suncorp Super Netball campaign to finish in fourth place.

The Swifts had the upper hand in the sides’ two match-ups of the 2020 season, with the Magpies now looking to put their pre-season work into play to reverse their fortunes.

The Swifts will rely on fresh talent this weekend, currently without Paige Hadley, Sarah Klau, Maddy Proud and Sophie Garbin who are in New Zealand with Australian Diamonds duties.
