"I can't wait to see 2020 and the girls, they're going to smash it, with an extra supporter there watching them"
April Brandley’s mum played netball whilst pregnant with her, so April always knew that when the time came for her, she could do the same. Upon finding out she was pregnant and discussing continuing to play for the remainder of the 2019 season she said “knowing that my mum had done it, gave me confidence that I could do it too”. “I listened to my own instincts and listened to my body…inside myself I felt good and I had to trust that”.
April and her husband Jason found out the exciting news just before April went away for the World Cup in Liverpool, “it’ll be cool in the future to tell the little bub that it played in a World Cup”.
“It was just really special walking out there knowing that it was my last game for Australia for a while and singing the anthem and knowing that they (April’s family) knew I was carrying a little one as well”
Whilst she wanted to tell the team the news as soon as possible, she didn’t want the team to be distracted. April made the decision to tell the team before the round 14 game against the Melbourne Vixens. As this could have been her last game, telling the team “was a really special moment” she said and “I think it brought out the best in me which is pretty cool” when discussing her performance over the final few weeks of the season.
In discussing her future in netball, April is open to anything. “You never know what’s going to happen in the future and if I feel like in a year’s time I’ll think about it but if not, I’m so happy with how things have gone”. April takes her baby break with 95 national league caps, and 39 Australian Diamonds caps.
