Geva Mentor and Ash Brazill have been appointed co-captains of Collingwood’s netball side for the 2022 Super Netball season.
Mentor will take the reins for a fourth term, while Brazill will lead for the first time as captain at the club.
Since joining Collingwood in 2019, Mentor has featured in the starting seven line-up for every game except one.
As the club’s first back-to-back best and fairest winner, Mentor’s outstanding leadership has been consistent having been voted by her teammates as the Players’ Player for three consecutive seasons.
The 37-year-old reached a milestone 150 caps for the English Roses during the recent Quad Series in January.
Having served as a vice-captain of both Collingwood’s netball (2017 & 2021) and AFLW (2019 & 2020) programs, Brazill will step up into the main captaincy position alongside Mentor this season.
The club’s cross-coder suffered an ACL injury in 2020 playing for the Pies’ AFLW side which saw her sidelined for the entire Super Netball season that same year. But Brazill made an impressive return to the court in 2021 playing all but one match.
As a foundation Magpie, the midcourter has made the most Super Netball appearances for Collingwood with a total of 57 games across five seasons.
Since receiving her first Australian Diamonds selection in 2015, Brazill has earned 12 test caps, most recently having been a member of the side that was crowned champions of the Quad Series.
Earlier this month, the 32-year-old announced she was stepping away from the 2022 AFLW season to focus on her netball commitments.
Collingwood’s General Manager of Netball, Amie Quirk congratulated the pair on their appointment.
“We are delighted to have Geva and Ash lead us in 2022,” Quirk said.
“Both are incredibly well respected amongst their peers and I know they will bring their own unique leadership styles to the program. They continue to lead by example both off and on court.
“We have no doubt they are the perfect pair to empower and lead our group to success in 2022.”
Collingwood will kick off its 2022 Super Netball campaign against the Adelaide Thunderbirds on Saturday 26 March.
