Coming off Round 5:

The Magpies fell to the NSW Swifts in a 62-53 loss at Ken Rosewall Arena on Sunday.

The Magpies had the upper-hand for the better part of three quarters of their clash with the Swifts, but never quite turned that advantage into real scoreboard pressure.

The Swifts didn't hit the front until the last five minutes of the second quarter, having trailed by five goals halfway through the term.

While the Magpies controlled play, the scoreboard remained tight and eventually blew out in a disappointing final quarter, which perhaps didn't reflect the competitive nature of the contest.

Shimona Nelson put together another solid shooting performance, with 41 goals at 95 per cent accuracy; while Ash Brazill was at her defensive best with four intercepts and five deflections, earning herself a position in the NISSAN Net Points Team of the Week.

While Collingwood were scheduled to play their fourth home match of the season at John Cain Arena this weekend, the Pies have instead remained in Sydney for another week following changes to the Super Netball Round 6 draw.

An eye on the opposition:

The Fever remain undefeated after pulling off a thrilling one-goal victory in a physical affair with GIANTS Netball at RAC Arena.

After scoring the opening goal of the match, the Fever didn’t reclaim the lead again until the dying stages of the final quarter before eventually stealing victory from the jaws of defeat with a Jhaniele Fowler goal after the siren.

Courtney Bruce (six gains and four intercepts) and Sunday Aryang (four gains and three intercepts) were instrumental in defence, with strong support from Stacey Francis-Bayman, Jess Anstiss and Olivia Lewis.

Verity Charles excelled in attack with 21 goal assists from 38 feeds, while Sasha Glagow also recorded 20 assists from 20 feeds.

Last time we met:

The Fever had the wood over the Magpies in their two encounters of the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball season, with a comfortable victory in Round 7 and a narrow one-goal win in Round 4.

At present, the two sides sit at fourth and fifth on the competition table. Both are on even points, with the Fever making quick work of accounting for their imposed point deduction, now the sole undefeated side in the competition.

Indigenous Round:

This week marks the second half of a split Indigenous Round, in which First Nations peoples and cultures will be recognised and celebrated.

Collingwood will wear their 2021 Indigenous dress, which features two soaring Magpies in a design created by proud Yorta Yorta and Gunnai man, Dixon Patten.

The design shows both magpies flying onwards and upwards, with outstretched wings, reaching new heights and possibilities. The background pattern of the design features gum leaves which represent cultural and personal growth.

The Magpies will also wear Free the Flag t-shirts during warm-up in support of the Free the Flag campaign. The Aboriginal Flag was proclaimed as a National Flag of Australia in 1995 and should be free of licensing restrictions that currently limit its use.
