The nine days of well deserved rest comes to an end as Collingwood has one final game to add to its belt this weekend as it looks to take on the Queensland Firebirds to kick off the final round of Super Netball.
Last time the two sides matched up, the Magpies took the victory with a terrific performance all round from the squad. Things do look a little different as both clubs see their season come to a close with the Firebirds finding form in the back end of the season.
At the Magpies attacking end, Gabby Sinclair and Shimona Nelson look to continue gelling as an offensive unit; Sinclair hasn’t stopped her nuclear shooting form from a distance. While Nelson, as always, has continued to prove strong against her defenders over the last few weeks with her strong post takes giving opposition defenders something to think about.
The Firebirds defence loves to hunt and play a physical brand, so the speedster duo of Molly Jovic and Kelly Altmann must continue to treasure possession, use their three seconds and pass as safely as possible.
On the defensive end, Geva Mentor and Jodi-Ann ward will need to force Firebirds shooter, Romelda Aiken - who has shown flashes of a super shot touch - out of the post and hold her there. Aiken is uncomfortable being forced out of the post so the Magpies defence needs to ensure that continues throughout the game.
Praise must be given to Tippah Dwan who has also come into her own from the super shot distance. Not allowing Dwan to find any form of rhythm will be vital in limiting any scoring runs. Melissa Bragg’s searing defensive form over the last few weeks will play nicely into the Magpies hands as her vertical and speed has disrupted passing lanes for offences. All in all, physicality and wearing the Aiken and Dwan down should yield some great returns for the Magpies attack.
