The Magpies will take on the NSW Swifts in a Tuesday edition of mid-week netball to kick off the resumed Round 12 fixture.
It’s been a tumultuous week for the Suncorp Super Netball, having relocated to a Queensland hub to see out the remaining three home and away matches of the season.
The Magpies initially travelled to Adelaide late last week, before a last-minute dash out of the city of churches to avoid an impending lockdown.
With games over the weekend postponed, the Magpies will return to open Round 12 and look to keep their finals hopes alive as mid-week netball highlights the season’s resumption.
Coming off Round 11:
The Magpies claimed bragging rights over the Vixens, winning the second Melbourne derby of the season with a four-goal victory in Round 11.
The Vixens held a two-goal advantage after a scrappy opening half, with both sides accumulating a tally of turnovers a lot higher than they would have preferred.
Collingwood inched their way to a 39-38 lead by the close of the third quarter before shutting down the Vixens' attack in the final quarter to win their fourth game of the season and stay alive in the race for fourth spot on the ladder.
Jodi-Ann Ward continued her outstanding season with perhaps her best game thus far, recording eight deflections, eight gains and three intercepts.
Ward was ably supported in the circle by skipper Geva Mentor, who had seven gains and eight deflections of her own, while down the other end of the court Shimona Nelson and Gabby Sinclair made the most of their opportunities at 94 per cent shooting accuracy.
An eye on the opposition:
The Swifts were pipped at the post by cross-town rivals the Giants in last week’s NSW derby.
The two Sydney clubs produced a high-quality contest but a strong finish from the GIANTS saw them move ahead of the Swifts into first place thanks to a superior percentage.
Prior to the derby, the Swifts recorded three consecutive wins with the highlight a thrilling one-goal victory over the West Coast Fever.
Last time we met:
The Swifts turned it on in an electric final quarter to run away with a 62-53 home win over the Magpies when the two sides last met in Round 5.
Sam Wallace scored seven straight goals to expand the Swifts’ lead from one to eight in a decisive surge, which ultimately led them to victory.
Collingwood started the match well, leading by three goals on a number of occasions in the first quarter, with Shimona Nelson putting on a strong display in the shooting circle.
While the Magpies controlled play for the better part of three quarters, the scoreboard remained tight and eventually blew out in a disappointing final quarter, which perhaps didn't reflect the competitive nature of the contest.
The Swifts pulled away through accurate shooting from Wallace and an impressive defensive display from Sarah Klau.
For the Magpies, Ash Brazill and Geva Mentor contributed four intercepts each, while Molly Jovic led the way through the mid-court with 29 feeds and 21 goal assists.
