A Melbourne Derby on interstate soil is becoming familiar territory for the Magpies and the Vixens, with the two sides to do battle at Netball SA Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Coming off Round 10:
Geva Mentor’s 200th national league game celebrations were spoiled last week, when the Magpies fell to the Giants by nine goals.
Shimona Nelson's opening goal of the match was the only time Collingwood held the lead, as the GIANTS played with control and poise to deal the Magpies their seventh loss of the season.
The Magpies will be looking to reignite the energy that was lacking last week.
“Across the board there just didn’t seem to be a lot of energy in the game today,” Nicole Richardson said of the Round 10 clash.
“I thought we did a good job defensively to really shut them down and made them work hard but we were just a bit off the mark with our energy and enthusiasm."
With the race for the top four well and truly on, a clean-sweep for the season against their cross-town rivals is vital for the Magpies.
The Magpies will welcome back star mid-courter Kelsey Browne, who returns from a concussion sustained in the Magpies’ Round 9 clash with the Thunderbirds.
After being managed in accordance with Netball Australia’s concussion policy, Browne is ready to go and will be a welcome addition to Collingwood’s mid-court.
An eye on the opposition:
The Melbourne Vixens come off a disappointing Round 10 loss, falling to a blistering NSW Swifts side by 14 goals.
Mwai Kumwenda was a shining light for the Vixens, draining six super shots in the final five minutes to claw the final margin back to a more respectable deficit.
Jo Weston stood up in defence, recording five deflections and an intercept; while Hannah Mundy led the way through the mid-court with ten goal assists and 21 feeds.
Last time we met:
The Magpies and the Vixens have faced off a total of ten times, with history leaning in favour of the Vixens, with seven wins to their name.
However, the most recent victory belongs to the Magpies, who took home the four points when the sides last met in Round 7 at Ken Rosewall Arena.
In arguably their best game of the season, the Pies were convincing 16 goal victors.
Shimona Nelson netted 55 goals, Geva Mentor and Jodi-Ann Ward each pulled off three intercepts and Gabby Sinclair contributed 25 goal assists.
