Here's what to expect when Collingwood takes on the Adelaide Thunderbirds this Sunday.
“Opportunity” is the word of the round for the Magpies. Round 10 is rolling in and presents a fresh location in Adelaide and a fresh opportunity for Collingwood to dive into their bench as they come face to face with the Thunderbirds.
Physicality at the defensive end from Geva Mentor and Jodi-Ann Ward will be key to wearing down the Thunderbirds young attack end. Lenize Potgieter’s hold in the post has kept defenders guessing and working overtime to snatch possession away from her all season. Mentor and Ward will need to guard aerial space with vigor as well as forcing Potgieter away from the post and into lower percentage shots.
Offensively, Shimona Nelson will need to hold tight to the post and defend her front space to avoid the likes of Shamera Sterling and her length and vertical ability. A new opportunity for new combinations against the Swifts as the Magpies looked at pushing Nyah Allen into goal shooter with Gabby Sinclair continuing to run the goal attack bib. This offensive rotation provided an opportunity for the Magpies to stretch the defence a little more with both Allen and Sinclair’s penchant for excellent ranged shooting.
The Thunderbirds hunt for the wild, risky long passes, so the midcourt trio of Molly Jovic, Kelly Altmann, and Melissa Bragg must treasure every possession and follow up every pass made. Jovic’s form against the Swifts earlier in the week was terrific, and if she can continue to gel with Altmann down the attack then the Magpies offence should have an indulgent offensive feast on their hands.
