Magpies return to training

With the Suncorp Super Netball League confirming the return of Netball in 2020, the Collingwood Magpies will return to training from Monday.

Collingwood Magpies Netball coach Rob Wright will have his squad on the training court from tomorrow after receiving news today that the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball season will begin on August 1.

Wright and his staff will not be wasting a day as they seek to prepare for the new campaign and improve on an encouraging fourth place finish in 2019.

Netball Australia announced this morning that the first matches of what is hoped to be a full 60-match home-and-away SSN season will be played on Saturday, August 1.

Although a detailed round one fixture is still to be revealed due to the uncertainties around interstate travel that remain as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wright said that to have a date to work towards was exciting for players, staff, fans, partners and all those who have been longing for Australia’s foremost women’s sport to return.

“We are training again, we will be playing again. We have a date of August 1 to work towards and the countdown to that first Saturday is going to be exciting,” Wright said.

“For our athletes, who have been training individually or in pairs over recent months while waiting for the chance to come together again as a squad, this is fantastic news.

“From here we will start to build up the program to have the players fit, strong and most of all cohesive on court by opening day.”

As with all sport at present, 2020 SSN matches are likely to be played without crowds but the entire season will be available to fans via broadcasts on Channel 9, Telstra TV and the Netball Live App. The story of the Magpies’ season will also be told through all of Collingwood Netball’s social media channels.

Collingwood chief executive, Mark Anderson, welcomed today’s announcement.

“The news is the green light some of this country’s finest female athletes have been waiting for,” Anderson said.

“As a club, we are tremendously excited to think that all three of our elite teams – SSN, AFLW and AFL – will get seasons away and, in a few weeks, we will have our AFL players and netballers in competition.

“2020 has been a challenging year for Australians on many fronts. We understand that some of the challenges remain and that sports will be different this year and, in all likelihood, for many more years.

“Netball is adapting and it is wonderful know that Suncorp Super Netball has been able to outline plans for a full season.”
