Matilda Garrett (captain) and Sharni Lambden (vice captain) will lead Victoria at the 19/U National Championships this week.

Garrett will captain the Victorian side, while Lambden will be vice-captain.

Both players had successful campaigns for the Tasmanian Magpies in the Australian Netball League (ANL) – and are training partners with Magpies Netball in the Suncorp Super Netball competition.

Garrett – an upcoming defender in the Australian netball realm – is enjoying a breakout year, having been awarded a VIS scholarship (offered to talented Victorian athletes) and being named in the initial Australian 21/U World Youth Squad earlier this month.

18-year-old Lambden will vice-captain the Victorian side having previously led the 2014 Australian U/15 team and being named as a part of the 2016 Australian Diamonds Development Squad.

The mid-courter was pitted as one of the brightest young netballers last year, and will be eager to add a second U/19 National Championship to her already impressive CV.

The National Netball Championships exhibits the best young netball talent around the nation, with players representing their respective states or territories.

New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland, ACT, Tasmania and the Northern Territory will join Victoria as the other teams competing in the National Championships.

After winning last year’s 19/U title against archrivals New South Wales, the Victorians are firming as tournament favourites again this year.

Last year’s victory was the state’s first 19/U title since 2012, and the Vics will be raring to go with the chance to be crowed back-to-back U19 National Champions this year.

Canberra will host the 2017 tournament, with the Victorian side’s first match to be played tomorrow (Wednesday 19 April) against ACT at 1pm.
