Collingwood welcomes Super Netball return

Collingwood’s netball program travelled to Brisbane today in preparation for a ‘phase one’ Super Netball competition.

Netball Australia yesterday confirmed a commitment from the Queensland Government which will see majority of the Super Netball season, including final matches, played across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and regional Queensland.

The season will be played in a condensed format with teams spending up to 16 weeks away from home.

Collingwood will relocate to a Queensland ‘mini hub’ for a minimum of five weeks to see out the initial rounds of play. The duration of a ‘hub’ stay has potential to be extended to see out the complete season.

Collingwood, along with the Melbourne Vixens, will adhere to a mandatory 14-day quarantine period which will be completed on Sunday, August 2.

Over the past weeks Netball Australia has worked closely with Victorian and Queensland Governments, and health authorities managing the COVID-19 pandemic, to achieve the best outcome for playing groups and the competition.

Netball Australia will confirm a ‘phase one’ Super Netball fixture in the coming days.

Collingwood’s GM of Women’s Sport, Jane Woodlands-Thompson, commends the league’s efforts in facilitating a relocation plan for all teams.

“All clubs can appreciate the challenge relocating teams to hubs across the nation. The tireless efforts of Super Netball CEO, Chris Symington, as well as Netball Australia CEO, Marne Fechner, to get this over the line needs to be acknowledged,” Woodlands-Thompson said,

“Collingwood also commends the support of the Queensland Government and health authorities in granting exemptions under these unprecedented circumstances.

“Lastly, I want to thank our athletes and staff members for their commitment to relocate in order to commence the season. The willingness and patience displayed by the group has allowed for a transition with ease.

“This season will undoubtedly test each teams’ physical and mental strength. To overcome this, we need to approach and unpack each phase as it’s presented to us.

“I have confidence in our program to take on all that’s in store for the remainder of the season.”

The Collingwood netball program, including all players and coaching staff, will be available for comment upon request. Please contact Tash Lewis for enquiries.
