Robinson Named Diamonds Co-Vice Captain

Madi Robinson has been named in the Samsung Australian Diamonds' leadership group.

Magpies midcourter Madi Robinson has been named as one of the Samsung Australian Diamonds co vice-captains, announced on Friday by Netball Australia.

The two-time Liz Ellis Diamond award winner joins Queensland Firebirds’ Gabi Simpson in supporting first-time captain and Sunshine Coast Lighting shooter Caitlin Bassett.

Magpie defender Sharni Layton will remain in the leadership group.

Robinson first debuted for the Diamonds in 2010, becoming the 152nd player to represent Australia, before winning a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

"At the elite level, there are so many outstanding leaders of the group, so it’s a huge privilege to be put up as a co vice-captain," Robinson told Magpies Netball.

"To be voted in by your teammates, that’s a special feeling.

"I've learnt a lot from captaining the Magpies this year - the personnel, the building of relationships - and I'm also looking forward to learning off other leaders from other clubs.

"I’m looking forward to the opportunity. I know it’s going to be challenging, but it’s an incredible group of players to be amongst."

Samsung Diamonds’ coach Lisa Alexander said this leadership group would play an important role in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Alexander credited Robinson’s leadership and resilience since returning from injury in 2015.

"The appointment is an outstanding achievement for Madi, who has been a part of this group since I took over the Diamonds in 2011," Alexander said.

"Her performance at the 2014 Commonwealth Games showed her potential and her ability to get the job done as a Diamond.

"She’s had a tough time missing Netball World Cup Sydney, due to her injury, and coming back from that. I’m really excited about what she is going to bring to the team in the next 12 months."

Every Quad Series game will be shown live on the Nine Network, across both Channel Nine and 9Gem.

The Netball Quad Series kicks off on Saturday 26th August, when the Samsung Diamonds meet the England Roses in Brisbane, Australia.
