Magpies Netball v Giants Netball

After enduring a heartbreaking one-goal loss in the last year’s semi-final, the Magpies will be out for revenge (and the eight points) when they meet the Giants in round seven in Sydney on Sunday.

Both teams are coming off the bye, so with a week off to refresh both the body and mind, you can expect a fast-paced and physical contest at Qudos Bank Arena between the two sides.

The Giants sit in second position, only one win behind the West Coast Fever; while the Magpies are placed seventh, but only trail the Giants by six championship points.

Can the Magpies close the gap with a big victory on the road? Tune into Channel 9 or Telstra Tv on Sunday to find out.

The two teams are coming off mixed results following their round six performances.

The Magpies made a triumphant statement in Tasmania, defeating the Queensland Firebirds by five goals in what could be a season-defining victory.

New recruit Erin Bell had her best game in the black and white stripes, leading the Magpies to victory with 33/39 in goals.

The Magpies’ mid-court was firing on all cylinders, with Shae Brown and Madi Robinson combining for 40 goal assists, while Ash Brazill was back to her very best with three flying interceptions to quell the Firebirds’ attack.

Meanwhile, the Giants put out an almighty challenge to the league-leading West Coast Fever, but ultimately fell short by two goals in Perth after four quarters of action.

The Giants flaunted their versatile attack against the Fever, with their 61 goals spread evenly amongst the trio of Susan Pettitt, Jo Harten and Kristina Brice.

2017 SSN Semi-Final – Giants Netball (52) defeated Magpies Netball (51) at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.

  • Kim Green – Having missed last year’s semi-final clash with a knee injury, the Magpies must lock down the Giants’ captain and wing attack, Kim Green, on Sunday. Green is coming off a monster game against the Fever before the bye, having recorded 23 goal assists, 19 centre passes and 37 circle feeds. Green is a prominent mover in the mid-court and is a key cog in the Giants’ attack. She sits only behind the Vixens’ Liz Watson for most goal assists (156) in the league, while the Magpies’ skipper Madi Robinson is staking her claim up that ladder with 133 so far on the season.
  • The semi-final rematch: After bowing out of the 2017 semi-final thanks to a last-minute go-ahead goal from the Giants, the Pies will be out for a little taste of revenge (but more importantly, the victory) when the two teams meet again on Sunday. Can the Magpies strike back and seal the victory on the road? Or will the Giants reinforce their hold on the competition.
  • Bec Bulley vs. Erin Bell – Bell is coming off her most effective game as a Magpie, while Bulley enforces the Giants defensive unit week in and week out. Both are veterans of the sport and know how to make an impact when it matters most. It’s the ultimate battle between goaler and defender, and you won’t want to miss this one on Sunday.
  • The ladder – The SSN ladder is shaping up as one of the most intriguing narratives of the season at the mid-way point of the year. The Giants – who sit in second place on four wins and 28 points – are in a strong position. However, the Magpies – who are in seventh on two wins and 22 points – could shake up the competition with a win over their opponents on the weekend. If you keep in mind the fact that the Sunshine Coast Lightning are in third position on three wins and 28 points, which has them sitting above the NSW Swifts on four wins and 26 points, well, then the opportunity for a lower placed team to leapfrog their competition is wide and open. Watch this space.
