Tasmanian Magpies Round 1 Recap

It was the perfect start to the 2019 DUANL season for the Tasmanian Magpies who returned home with two wins against the Queensland Fusion in Brisbane over the weekend.

Magpies coach Elissa Kent was happy to see all players take to the court for the opening round of the season, particularly as a number of their key players were unavailable for selection.

“With our two captains Mel Bragg and Kelsie Rainbow currently in the SSN environment and Sharni Lambden with an injury, it was really pleasing to see the group remain focused and un-phased with the introduction of replacement players,” Kent told magpiesnetball.com.au.

“The fact that this group is so adaptable and focused really puts us in good stead for the rest of the season.”

Despite a few nerves in the opening match, the Magpies managed to find composure and confidence early on, allowing them to take a strong lead by three-quarter time.

Magpies keeper Brooke Allan made her return to the court after she was forced to the sidelines with an ankle injury last season.

Kent was happy to see the young defender back on court and dominating, standing tall within the ring.

“Brooke has started the 2019 ANL season with a very strong performance in goal-keeper and she’s really stood up to the challenges, particularly in terms of her opponents,” Kent said.

The Pies took the opportunity to play around with different combinations and pace in the second match.

“We had some excellent connections at times and explored the use of the new substitution rule.”

As the Magpies now shift their focus to next week’s round two clash against the Canberra Giants, Kent says communication is a key focus for the team.

“I think it’s important for us to build on our connections both on and off the court and to have more clarity in our structures in order to better adapt to what we are being presented with.”
