Magpies fly in finals to all come home with medals.
Wow what a World Cup that was!
Day 10 on Sunday (Monday AM Melbourne time) saw the England Roses fight hard for the bronze medal against South Africa, followed by the Aussie Diamonds suffering a heart-breaking loss to New Zealand by one goal to claim the silver medal.
The athletes are now on their way back to Australia to prepare for round 10 of Suncorp Super Netball (SSN), specifically our Magpies who play this Sunday against the Giants, as part one of the double header.
Our co-captain Geva had an outstanding fifth World Cup appearance, dominating in defence as per usual! Our superstar finished the competition with over 30 deflections, eight intercepts and 15 rebounds – simply outstanding.
Vice-captain and one of the newer Diamonds in the squad, Kelsey Browne showcased her finest netball and was rewarded for it with two MVPs early in the competition. Kelsey left nothing out on court, as she finished the competition with 153 goal assists, 88 centre passes, three intercepts and six deflections.
No injury could stop our third Magpie at the Cup, April Brandley, who had plenty of international experience leading into her first World Cup with 34 test caps under her sleeve. April was crucial in many of the Diamonds games, finishing with nine centre passes, one rebound, seven intercepts and 12 deflections.
We’re so proud of Geva, Kelsey and April on their individual and team performances at the 2019 Netball World Cup, but can’t wait to have them back in the nest ready to take on the remainder of the SSN season in full force.
Over 10 international players will be making their return to SSN this Sunday at our Super Sunday round 10 double header at Melbourne Arena! Make sure you’re there to give all the players a huge welcome home.
